Flatbows vary widely in design, and the term includes some 'Primitive' designs as well as the American longbow. I have separated them from the latter because there is a defined shooting class in most competitions for that specific style of bow.
A 'self' bow (made from one piece of wood) relies on the natural properties of the material for resilience and power. When available in suitable quality, ash, yew, maple, osage and elm are among the woods I use.
Alternatively laminating a strong tensile natural material such as bamboo or hickory onto the back of the bow widens the choice of timbers for the belly of the bow. Sinew and rawhide are also alternatives.
Decoration is a matter of choice and options are many -the most popular is painting the bow using natural pigments.
